From the Author:
Sacred food has always been a passionate interest of mine. I wrote the African-American Ritual Cookbook, after years of cooking, study, and ceremony with many Voodoo and Santeria priestesses. Everyone has to eat. It is the simplest and in a way most sincere way we have with connecting to the divine. I believe that you are never too old or young to learn how to cook. Some of you may be surprised to hear that I put in my requisite parental time as a girl scout leader. Part of my duties somehow ended up being that I was to help the girls gain their outdoor cooking badge. It was a bit nerve-wracking helping a bunch of 9 year old girls, most of whom weren't allowed to use the microwave, navigate fire, propane, and matches. We made it through in one piece, my own daughter even went on to get her degree in restaurant management at Cornell, and now manages a restaurant for a world renowned chef. Please check out the African-American Ritual Cookbook it is filled with great recipes like this one for New Orleans Ritual Voodoo Coffee.
New Orleans Ritual Voodoo Coffee - There are many different ritual coffee drinks used around the world. Many of these are alcoholic and are used both as offerings to the gods, and fortification for the worshipers. The following is dedicated to my friends at the Voodoo Spiritual Temple in New Orleans, and the coffeehouse Voobrew Café which used to be next door.
- 1 large cup dark roast coffee with chicory
- 1 healthy dash cream
- 1 pinch cinnamon
- 1 pinch nutmeg
- 1 healthy dash rum ( we prefer Barbancourt)
- 1 tsp. cocoa powder
Mix together and enjoy.
